To Gamers:
“One in a million.” That’s usually a good thing, right? Not in my case, or in the case of thousands of others suffering from an orphan disease.
What is an orphan disease? It is a rare disease affecting less than .05% of the population (for example, fewer than 200,000 people in the United States). Orphan diseases are typically genetic in origin and either life-threatening or chronically debilitating, but most people are so unaware of them that funding for research and support networks is little to non-existent.
I am Josh Sommer. As a college freshman in May 2006, I found out about the existence of an orphan cancer called chordoma the hard way… I had it. Unfortunately, there was no cure and not much research going on to find one any time soon. When the doctors told me, I was devastated and overwhelmed, but determined to do everything I could to change that reality. I didn’t know anything about biology, but I started working in one of the world’s only chordoma research labs, and then along with my mother started the Chordoma Foundation to coordinate and fund research across the world. Finding your own cure may seem absurd, but with the advancements in medicine and technology it doesn’t have to be that way. It just takes a lot of effort, ingenuity, and funding.
In addition to establishing the Chordoma Foundation to research a cure for my own orphan disease, I wanted to help others like me and met the folks behind DonateGames. I’m now a spokesperson for the charity and want to introduce you to this uplifting organization.
